Two open PhD positions in the fields of: Terahertz nonlinear and quantum optics

Terahertz spectroscopy of graphene and related materials at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP), Mainz, Germany

Ultrafast dynamics & Terahertz spectroscopy group at MPIP is looking for two motivated and
ambitious PhD candidates to strengthen its on‐going research in the broadly defined fields of
“Terahertz nonlinear and quantum optics” and “Terahertz spectroscopy of graphene and related
materials”.

The group is led by Prof. Dmitry Turchinovich, and is a part of collaborative department of
Molecular Spectroscopy, headed by MPIP director Prof. Mischa Bonn. The group uses the stateof‐
the‐art methods of ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy (linear, nonlinear, ultrabroadband, optical
pump – THz probe, THz pump – optical probe) to investigate the basic properties of light and
matter on ultrafast timescales.

Our research involves collaboration with the partners both at MPIP and University of Mainz, and
at several universities and companies in Europe and the U.S. Both PhD projects will involve a
research stay abroad (in Europe or the U.S.).

Qualifications
The candidates must hold a university degree in physics or electrical/optical engineering (or
equivalent). The applicants are expected to have an experimental background in at least one of
the following:

  •  ultrafast / terahertz spectroscopy
  •  semiconductor physics
  •  ultrafast lasers / laser physics
  •  nonlinear optics
  •  quantum optics
  •  spintronics

as well as a good understanding of fundamentals of solid state physics and quantum mechanics.

Proven experience with data acquisition and data analysis software (LabView, Matlab, etc) is a
strong advantage.

Further information
Both PhD positions are open until filled. Please submit your inquiries and applications via e‐mail
to Prof. Dmitry Turchinovich (turchino@mpip‐mainz.mpg.de) or Prof. Mischa Bonn
(bonn@mpip‐mainz.mpg.de).

The application must contain: a CV, a list of publications (if any), a letter (max. 2 A4) motivating the choice of a research project, and the contacts of 1‐2 referees.

Applications without the letter of motivation will not be considered.
